What vaccines does my pet need? Dogs and cats require various vaccinations at different times in their life. DOGS:
Initial immunizations should be given to puppies when they are 6
weeks old. Immunity received in mother's milk
typically dissipates at this stage of development.
Vaccinations might include: Distemper, Parvovirus,
Infectious Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Coronavirus. A vaccination for the incurable viral disease, Rabies, is not given to puppies prior to 12 weeks of age. Repeat vaccinations: Puppies need to receive 'booster' shots every 3-4 weeks until they are 4 months old. CATS: Initial
immunizations should be given to kittens when they are 9 weeks old.
Vaccinations might include: Viral Rhinotracheitis,
Panleukopenia, Chlamydophila and calicivirus. As in puppies, kittens do not receive Rabies vaccinations prior to 12 weeks of age. Repeat vaccinations: Kittens need to receive a 'booster' shot when they are 16 weeks old. What is Valley Fever?
Valley
Fever is a disease caused by the Coccidioides immitis fungus.
This pathogen thrives in warm, dry climates. Valley Fever is
extremely common in Arizona. Warning signs
include: Chronic Cough, Swelling of Joints, Weight Loss, Skin
Abscesses, Pain, Eye Problems, Incoordination or Seizures. If
your pet exhibits any of the above symptoms, please call our office at
480-889-0881 and schedule an appointment. Once Valley Fever is
diagnosed, treatment should begin immediately Anti-fungul agents,
such as Fluconazole, may be required. Thankfully, Valley Fever
need not debilitate your pet, especially if it is caught in its early
stages. What is Heat Stroke? Heat stroke, or hyperthermia, ocurrs when an animal's body temperature rises above 103 degrees. Heat
stroke is potentially fatal and is common in Arizona, especially during
the summer months. Signs to look for
include hypersalivation, excessive panting and sluggishness.
Dogs and cats should always have adequate water. If they
are outside, they need shaded area.
